Rotational head injuries in fighting sports can be minimized if participants wear padded boxing gloves and headgear rather lighter protective gear or no protection at all, a laboratory study suggested.
For instance, angular velocity and angular momentum transfer were decreased with the use of boxing gloves rather than mixed martial arts gloves because of a shorter duration of contact (0.0073 seconds versus 0.0143 seconds), according to Adam J. Bartsch, PhD, of the Cleveland Clinic, and colleagues.
